Now with handles. I know the coffee addicts will appreciate larger one.

Big daddy

Trying out a shape for the large plates of a 6-person service I'm working on. I may prefer a wider rim, but may have to practice more to do it well. Horizontal clay has its demands.
Speckled Buff (cone 5), 4 pounds, 12" wet diameter, 3/4" rim.

Hallelujah!

My trusty ol' kitchen scale has been returned!
I can now more competently make pieces of similar size.

Wait, this looks familiar somehow....

Uh, that would be because it is.
After I cut through the bottom of the last one while trimming it, I decided to try again. That's how it goes: some make it, some don't. I made this one with less clay, apparently-- I don't have my scale yet to measure-- as the platter isn't as wide and bowl smaller; and the shapes are a little different. But I like it well enough. I have yet to wire it off the bat. I think I should have waited on the last one as well, as it wasn't a clean job and distorted the piece. I'll let this one dry a bit before wiring.

It's a bowl! It's a plate! It's both!

Using the last of my leftover Speckled Buff scraps, I threw this last night: an integrated dip bowl and plate. Its design is based on one I did a few years ago: see the June, 2007 entry. I think this one may be structurally compromised: I wedged it a bit before throwing, but I could feel lumps that may have been bubbles (scored them, but not sure they're gone) or impurities in the clay. We'll see.
